Sabbatical Story:

Peace Corps in Kyrgyzstan

Her Story:

While climbing the corporate ladder, a feeling began to set in: this wasn’t the life she wanted. It wasn’t the *future* she wanted. A chance meeting at a party introduced her to the idea of the Peace Corps: two years of service in a place far from home. She floated the idea to her husband, who surprised her by being fully on board. In 2013, they set out for Kyrgysztan, a mountainous and remote country in Central Asia, and volunteered to do health and youth support services within a completely new culture, language, and lifestyle. After 30 months of eye-opening and world-changing experiences, they returned, forever changed. She knew she would never be the same, and while gaining perspective about spending, American privilege, and women’s rights, she came to understood deeper values in life: time, loved ones, and a new adaptability to navigating cultures and borders with greater ease. As co-founder of TOWYN, she now wants to support people seeking their own disruptive adventure, motivated by a deeper calling and a yearning to continue this lifestyle for her and her family. She dedicates her life to this mission, crafting sabbaticals and raising her young children to look beyond borders with insatiable curiosity.

Sabbatical Story:

An immersive life in Mexico

Her Story:

Kailie was supposed to follow the ‘regular’ path after college. She had a regular job interview, and they made a point to show her the popcorn you could have in the regular break room. This was enough to repel her, and jolt her away from the ‘regular’ path. Instead, she worked at a bed and breakfast in Mexico, immersing herself with local families and living a life beyond recognition. A different pace, a different culture, and a disconnect from the norms of America. She thrived, and eventually returned with a sense that she wasn’t the same person anymore. The idea of rebooting her life, again and again, was suddenly much less terrifying. She went to graduate school, lived alternately in New York City and Alaska, before returning to her native Washington State to settle and grow her family. Kailie found her way to financial planning to run their father’s longtime investment firm, yet like her sister, she couldn’t operate within convention anymore. Her sabbatical experience had forever disrupted her perspective, and she wanted to find more, for herself and her clients. Today, as co-founder of TOWYN, she is supporting similarly unconventional path-seekers while instilling values of discovery and global open-mindedness in her two little ones. Life is busy, but it does feel like a life, at least.

Sabbatical Story:

Studied Marine Biology in Hawaii

His Story:

Mario has an impressive resume, with a twist. Many years at Vanguard led to working with small financial firms and eventually owning his own investment practice. The twist? A sabbatical moment that he has never forgotten. Like George Costanza, Mario always wanted to be a marine biologist. Unlike George Costanza, Mario actually did something about it. This sabbatical moment, a critical one in his life, sent him to Hawaii and the Seychelles, to study oceanography. Ultimately, this turned out to be a valuable pause of his career and led him back to the world of finance, but on his own more intentional terms. Today, Mario designs investment portfolios for TOWYN, supporting clients’ sabbatical planning with a patient investment approach. Ask him about marine biology, though, and you’ll witness a genuine joy. That’s why we do this, and why Mario is a key part of our team.

Sabbatical Story:

Two adventures across East Asia and Europe

Her Story:

They say great client service comes from a place of deeper understanding. Empathy. And lived experience. Marisa is probably why they say that! Few appreciate the power of sabbaticals more than her, having made her first attempt in East Asia before it was unluckily cut short by the global pandemic. She returned home, and quickly rebuilt her life as so many sabbatical-goers do. Two years later, she tried again, and spent 10 weeks across Europe. When she came back this time, it was on her own terms, and she decided to make a career change. This eventually led her to Towyn, where she manages the client service experience. If you’re a TOWYN client, you’ll likely get to interact with Marisa. Don’t be surprised if you have more than a few values in common!

Sabbatical Story:

Serving in the Air Force and pursuing education

His Story:

Kingston has gotten where he is through a 3 word mantra, drawn from his own sabbatical experience: Inspect. Repair. Repack. While serving in the Air Force as a rigger, Kingston had a vital job: parachute inspector. In doing this, he discovered a love for process-based work, and eventually found his way to compliance. He inspects, repairs, and repacks for planning firms across the country and does so with remarkable precision. Kingston defines sabbaticals as a life break, and is a natural on the TOWYN team given that he’s had two of these moments in his life: serving in the Air Force, and the afterward period of pursuing education. He understands the innate value of these rare moments in life and his compliance support allows TOWYN to support others to have the same.

Sabbatical Story:

Living in South America and Mexico

Her Story:

The traditional path just wasn’t for Yasmine. And luckily so! Her sabbatical was 5 months living in South America and Mexico, a time that still ripples out to her current life today. She met Kailie (TOWYN co-founder) during that adventure, and now is an important voice on the TOWYN team. She advises on marketing and outreach, and has been a part of the firm since 2020. She partners with companies that share her values, and it’s easy to see how TOWYN fits in. Her take on sabbaticals? They let you own your life, and build a career that is truly your own, rather than a pre-set path. They gave her perspective on the choices we make in life, and it’s hard to imagine a voice more perfect to be TOWYN’s communications manager!
